Parties Scheduled to Meet in Bargaining

Scheduled Negotiations Postponed

 

Last week our bargaining team tabled our package of non-economic demands, including enhanced protection of our jobs and our work, fair staffing processes, and improvements to vacation and other related leaves. With respect to economic issues such as benefits, pension and wages, we reiterated to the University that, as we had explained in December, we would have proposals on these items once the University responded to our requests for payroll, benefits and other financial and scheduling information. Also at that time our team proposed that we begin negotiations on non-economic items in order to get the process going. McGill refused, and indicated that it would not begin the bargaining process until all of our economic proposals were on the table.

We received the payroll data in a functional format for the first time this week, and only yesterday received the scheduling information requested of the University. We again reiterated our position that the parties meet and begin bargaining non-economics next week on the 26th. The University refused, holding to its position. As a result, negotiations scheduled for the 26th are cancelled.

Bargaining Scheduled for February 7th

The parties are scheduled to meet on February 7th to finally begin bargaining.

We remain perplexed, to say the least, at McGill’s position. We are ready to bargain, and we are committed to achieving our goals in this round of bargaining.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR THE EXECUTIVE BOARD POSITIONS OF

 

President
Vice-President
Vice-President (Communications)
Vice-President (Finance)
Vice-President (Labour Relations)

 

Nominations from the members are requested to fill the Executive Board positions of President, Vice-President, Vice-President (Communications), Vice-President (Finance), Vice-President (Labour Relations) for a two-year term commencing June 2011 and ending in June 2013.

Nominations will open as of Wednesday, January 19, 2011
and close Friday, February 11, 2011 at 12:00 NOON

Each nominee is asked to provide a pen sketch of no more than two hundred (200) words by email. (Please note that candidates’ pen sketches will be printed as submitted.)

Details of each position are available for review on MUNACA’s website. I encourage any members who are considering running for a position to read what the position entails. You may review these details at www.munaca.com/node/223 as well as details found in the MUNACA By-Laws.

To be valid, nominations together with the pen sketches must be received by the Chief Returning Officer, MUNACA, 3483 Peel Street, no later than Friday, February 11, 2011 at 12:00 NOON. The Chief Returning Officer shall validate the nominations. A nomination form is attached for your convenience.

Only members in good standing of MUNACA (i.e. must have received their membership cards) can nominate, agree to run for the position, or vote in MUNACA Elections.

Each nomination form must be signed by at least 10 members. It is the candidate’s responsibility to ensure that nominations are made by members of the Association. If you have any questions concerning this or wish to verify your membership, please call the MUNACA office at 6565.

Free Legal Advice Service

Free Legal Advice Service for MUNACA members

 

MUNACA is reminding you of your right to the free Legal Advice Service for all MUNACA Members. This service is strictly offered for the member’s personal use and is only intended to cover brief legal consultations of approximately 45 minutes on any topic (e.g. family law, landlord-tenant problems, consumer protection questions, advice about wills or contracts, etc.) everything, but labour relations which are covered by your union.

Please note that members are only entitled to one free consultation per semester, any additional consultation is at members’ expense. The consultation will take place at the MUNACA office and is strictly confidential. MUNACA’s only involvement is in the scheduling of appointments.

Please call the MUNACA office at local 6565 for appointments, which are normally scheduled for the second and fourth Tuesday of the month from 4:30 to 6:45 p.m. Please note that a 48-hour notification is necessary for cancellation or rescheduling of any appointment. Failure to do this will result in loss of your consultation privilege.
 

Bargaining Team Meets with University Team

Union Provides University with Non-Economic Proposals
 

On Thursday our Bargaining Team met with McGill and tabled our package of non-economic demands, including enhanced protection of our jobs and our work, fair staffing processes that allow MUNACA members the ability to build their careers at McGill and that properly reflect our seniority, and improvements to vacation and other related leaves. With respect to such critical economic issues as benefits, pension and wages, we notified the University in December when the parties first met that we would have proposals on these items once the University responded to our requests for payroll, benefits and other financial information.

Management Refuses to Present Its Proposals

 

Despite the fact that we indicated last month that we would not be able to table economic proposals until we had a response from the university on our financial information request, McGill indicated for the first time today that it would not begin the bargaining process until all of our economic proposals were on the table. Our team proposed that bargaining proceed, and that the parties work on non-economic items until issues related to our financial information request of the university were resolved. McGill refused.

We are disappointed, to say the least, in McGill’s position. We are ready to bargain. We are committed to achieving our goals in this round of bargaining.

We are scheduled to meet with them on January 26th. We’ll be sure to update as things progress.
