Statement on Divestment

MUNACA supports the efforts of Divest McGill to convince McGill University to divest from companies which extract fossil fuels. We are disturbed and baffled that CAMSR (Committee to Advise on Matters of Social Responsibility) has rejected a finding of social harm from the use of fossil fuels. The use of fossil fuels is the major contributor to climate change. Climate change, if not sharply curtailed, will lead to severe environmental damage, deterioration in human health and serious harm to the sustainability of many communities worldwide. The position of the Board of Governors runs counter to the prevailing opinion of climate scientists, and to the spirit of the recent climate talks in Paris. We would have hoped McGill, as one of Canada’s top universities, would take a leading role on this issue.
