Update on Collective Agreement - Feb 9, 2012

Date:
Thursday, 9 February, 2012 (All day)

Dear Members,

We are in the process of verifying the wording and interpretation of the articles proposed by the Conciliator and voted on by the membership as part of our new collective agreement. In its latest response, the university interpreted some articles in a manner that clearly was not negotiated. We are currently attempting to set up a meeting with the Conciliator so that we can resolve this issue as soon as possible. We will keep you all updated.

Student occupation of the Deputy Provost's office

Date:
Thursday, 9 February, 2012 (All day)
Statement from MUNACA Executive Regarding the Occupation of The Office of the Deputy Provost, Student Life and Learning

The administration's response, to dismiss the results of a democratically held referendum, was unacceptable. A suggestion for a clearer set of questions, or referral to a third party at McGill knowledgeable in surveys/questionnaires would have been more constructive.

We hope that the Administration has learnt, following the MUNACA strike, that earnest and constructive dialogue is a far better solution than to threaten peaceful demonstrators that are trying to communicate their issue.  It is the fear of the MUNACA executive that the administration, elected to serve and educate, will respond again with undue force causing harm to the students. We call on both the administration and the students to negotiate solutions to the referendum issue based on respect for the students' governing bodies.  We also believe it would be essential for the parties, particularly the McGill Administration, to reexamine the relationship between the Deputy Provost and the student body.

Update on Collective Agreement

Date:
Thursday, 2 February, 2012 (All day)

Dear Members,

We have been receiving a number of inquires as to when members can expect to receive their retroactive pay and when the new Collective Agreement will be signed.

No retroactive payments or increases will be made until the new Collective Agreement is signed.  Both MUNACA and the University are working on finalizing the wording of the new or modified articles to the new Collective Agreement.  We are currently in the process of finalizing the last few articles.  After this is done the entire text will need to be translated into French and proof-read.  MUNACA estimates that this should be done by the end of February/early March.  As soon as the text goes to translation, we will inform the membership to keep you all up-to-date.

Solidarity for Rio Tinto Workers in Alma

Date:
Tuesday, 17 January, 2012 (All day)

SOLIDARITY – Support for locked-out Rio Tinto workers in Alma

The MUNACA executive and PSAC Québec have sent a joint letter of support to locked-out Rio Tinto Alcan workers, who are also FTQ members. We expressed our support and solidarity with their fight, in particular given the support we received from the FTQ, and given the multiple injunctions and legal proceedings they are facing just as we did during our strike. MUNACA also sent a $1,000 cheque for the locked-out workers.

Collective Agreement Signature Update

Date:
Tuesday, 17 January, 2012 (All day)

 Collective Agreement Signature – Update

On Monday, we met with McGill to review and discuss some discrepancies in the first draft of the new Collective Agreement (CA) that McGill sent to MUNACA at the end of December. The University has committed to getting back to us by the end of the week with any further corrections. The next steps will be to review their corrections and propose any other ones needed. Then, the University will have the new CA translated into French, and we will ensure the French and English versions match exactly. Once that is done, we will sign the CA. Only when the CA is signed will McGill pay retroactive increases. MUNACA will try to move this process along as quickly as possible, but ensuring the CA is free of errors must remain the priority. We will continue to keep you updated throughout the process.
